Meet Sue Sweeting, candidate for Watauga County Commission

As a child of a Naval Officer, my family moved every 3-4 years in the United States. I grew up during the War in Vietnam, and many people did not like the military. Most places I lived, I was picked on and bullied. These experiences made me stronger and helped develop my desire to help others.

I have lived in Watauga County since 1978 (46 years), and I am a retired nurse who worked as a Family Nurse Practitioner in the Watauga community for over 38 years.

I am honored to have a supportive, loving family: 2 daughters (one a registered nurse at Watauga Hospital, one in heaven) and one grandson who attends Watauga public school.

My career in nursing was not only to help others, but to be an advocate for my patients and their families. I was honest and truthful and did my best to consider and act on each patient’s individual circumstances and goals. I have carried these qualities with me throughout my life in everything I do. I pledge to get things done right for you and your family, and I have a life record to prove it.

My strength as a woman comes from my faith and my life circumstances. I attend St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock, where I am active in Sunday School and Vestry, and am Chair of the Altar Guild. When I embrace my image of a loving God and do what I need to do for balance in my life, I can face the difficult times in my life.

Moving Watauga County Forward

I believe we can do better:

  • in protecting our local law enforcement;
  • in supporting and enhancing our excellent public schools;
  • in moving forward with new ideas and strategies for providing affordable housing for those of us who live and work here;
  • in protection of our environment;
  • and in improving our County’s emergency response system.

I believe local government should act on local concerns as needed and desired by its people. Please contact me any time to let me know your concerns and ideas!

    Accomplishments

    As a former Watauga County Commissioner from 1998-2002:

    • I helped increase money for Special Education students in Watauga County.
    • I accomplished the naming of 421 as the Doc Watson Highway, providing some development protection including no billboards on this gateway to our community.
    • I supported retaining Fire Department supplements to pay for training and new equipment.

    As a Blowing Rock Town Council member from 2013-2021

    • I accomplished sidewalk connections from downtown Bass Lake to Moses H. Cone Memorial Park.
    • I oversaw the widening and completion of 321 bypass.
    • Accomplished a general obligation bond approved by voters for water and sewer line replacements, street paving, sidewalks, and improving parks and recreation.

    I have a proven history of public service and an eagerness to serve you and your family.

    As a Family Nurse Practitioner for 38 years, I have learned to listen to people and to negotiate for their best care. As a Watauga County Commissioner from 1998-2002, and a Blowing Rock Town Council member from 2013-2021, I responded to people’s needs and got things done. That’s why I’m running for a seat on the Watauga County Board of Commissioners to represent your neighborhood in the new District #5. (Blowing Rock, Blue Ridge, Elk and Stony Fork precincts).

    I believe we need a more responsive County Commission that will listen to and answer your concerns and ideas about our community. That’s why I’m asking for your vote for a seat to represent your neighborhood in the new District #5. (Blowing Rock, Blue Ridge, Elk and Stony Fork precincts).
